UltraViolet Account ?

Barney

Longhorns, Cowboys, Spurs, & Rangers...love Texas
Since I now have my room going & have been out of the loop for awhile, I have some questions on how UltraViolet works.
It says to open an account & UltraViolet Retailer. Says to consult with the retailer for list of compatible SD and HD devices and streaming and download capability.
What would be a suggested retailer to setup my account and really how does this service work ? So far it will just be me & my son, so both of us can access the account, right?
Also noticed that a locker access charge may apply after one year from code redemption...how much is this charge ?

The UltraViolet retailers that I know of are Vudu, M-Go, Flixster and CinemaNow. Vudu has by far the best selection of titles, is the only one of the bunch to also belong to Disney movies anywhere and also happens to have the best audio/video quality by a long shot. There is a Vudu client on Roku. It is also on Playstation, XBox, Samsung SmartTV, Vizio SmartTV and a ton of Blu-Ray players. I personally use two Roku 3 boxes and a Roku TV. It also works on iOS and on Android and has a decent HTML client, though not all movies are available in HD on a PC.

The surcharge is entirely theoretical. Nobody does it and I doubt anyone will, because it would be a great way to chase away customers who might otherwise spend money buying movies and TV shows. Once you set up your UltraViolet account, create a Vudu account and link them. It is pretty easy. After that, you can do everything through Vudu. Vudu has a great disc-to-digital program that will allow you to buy HD copies of movies you own on DVD for $2.50 or on Blu-Ray for $1 (if you do 10 at a time).

Another great thing about UltraViolet is that there are a ton of places to buy movies very, very cheaply. This link is for a directory site that connects to a ton of stores. The typical movie runs $6-8, though some can be more and others less. I buy on these sites a lot, as the cost is usually 1/2 to 1/3 what I'd pay on Vudu or one of the other retail sites. Vudu does run great sales and has a nice bargain bin, so I do buy a fair number of titles through them as well.

Hey Scott, thank you for chimming in. Vudu was going to be my next question but you answered it !
So what is the UltraViolet account for if I use Vudu ? I saw on Vudu where you redeem the codes.....confused ?

UltraViolet is directly controlled by the studios and is the underlying digital rights locker. Vudu is basically a retail outlet. When you create a UV account, all of the UV titles that you buy on Vudu will be stored in your locker and you will be able to access them via any other UV retailer you link your account to. When you buy a movie and redeem the UV code, that redemption only works if you have a UV account to redeem the code against. It works similarly with DMA (Disney Movies Anywhere). Vudu, Amazon, Microsoft, Google Play and Apple iTunes are all DMA resellers. You create a DMA account, link your other accounts and then any movie you buy through any reseller shows up everywhere. I can stream my Disney movies through Amazon, Vudu, Google Play or iTunes, because my account is linked to all four.

Amazon is rumored to be in negotiations to join UltraViolet, but it has been going slowly and there have been no new press releases in almost a year. I'm still holding out hope, as they just joined DMA.

So Amazon has a cloud..for bought movies & music ?
I think I remember hearing about their music cloud/locker...need to study that out.
I've been out of the loop too long.

Amazon Instant Video is not connected to UltraViolet, which means it will not work with the Digital HD codes that come with most movies. The reason I do not use them is that you can only buy the movies from Amazon and you can only watch them on Amazon. Your license is through Amazon, whereas a UV license is through the studio. I do not buy movies from iTunes or Google Play for the same reason, unless they are Disney.

I love Vudu. Awesome picture and sound quality. Basically you set up several accounts with various sites like Vudu, Cinema Now, Flixster, Paramount, Universal and Sony. Many sites give you free movies when you sign up or link your account to Ultraviolet. Right now Disney gives you Monsters Inc free when you link. As Haywood mentioned there are many many sites to buy new movie releases for 1/4 the cost of Bluray and tax free. You can buy Fast and Furious 7 now for 6.00 on many sites.

I like you can convert DVD to HDX (Bluray quality) for 2.50 each when you convert ten or more. I've converted my entire DVD collection to HDX and then have sold my DVDs to recoup my costs. You can also convert movies you get from your public library or do what I do and go to used DVD stores with a 7 day no questions asked return policy. So basically you can "buy" Bluray quality movies for 2.50/each

You can also buy entire TV series cheap (just bought Flash season one for 17.00) instead of 45.00 and tax at stores.

I like that I have five family members who are linked to my account so when they add a movie or TV series it's added to my account. I have one member who added all four seasons of Game of Thrones. Here's a picture showing I have over 1,700 movies in my account (including new and older movies) and my TV series I have listed.

Here's a picture of just one site that sells HDX new release movies (tax free) of new releases. See Fast and Furious 7 for 6.00 and Disney's new Cinderella for 8.00 compared to 20.00 at stores right now.

When you share your UV library, isn't there a limit of three concurrent streams across all accounts?

Well, today I set up accounts for Vudu & UV. I had 7 discs with UV numbers that hadn't expired. Even though I have all 3 Hobbits (hadn't watched any yet) I watched the 1st one through Vudu. ...amazing.
This is the way to go!
Thanks Scott & Matt.
Get with my son tonight (after his band practice) and get him set up.

Hey Matt, on that watchthewolf site, some movies are out of stock, do they restock pretty fast or do you look elsewhere ?
Also, how do you convert your DVD's to HDX on UV for $2 each?

Barney it's pretty much grab em when you can there are tons of sites to go to I'll list em I just awhile.

With upgrading you have to download the Vudu disc to digital app and then just place your your DVD in your computer DVD tray and the app instantly recognizes your movie (most of the time. It costs 5.00 a movie to upgrade but when you reach ten or more movies in your cart the cost is dropped by 50% so basically your upgrading your DVD to HDX for 2.50/each.

you wanted a list of the place I go to.

I've bought from all these sites with no issues.

Thank you Matt. Now I've got a list & I think one of those Scott listed.
I'll look for that app & see if my son will let me get it on his PC.

Haywood forget to answer no it's not. Each linked is their own entity. It's actually two streams per account. So me and my mom share my account so we both can watch a movie at the same time but if I let one more person use my account then it would be an issue if all three used my same account. Now for linked members all five of my family have there own accounts just linked so they each can stream two members so essentially all ten streams could occur at the same time with no issues.

Okay, Samsung SUHD 4K good to go. Sony bluray player w/apps connected to Sony Bravia, good to go.
Now just build the digital library. :handgestures-thumbup:
