4K TV is real... who's getting one first?

I'm all about a 65' OLED 4k set.

When those are less than $2500, then I am all in! Until then I am ignoring everything... haha.

That's exactly my strategy. Unless my LR display breaks down, I'm holding out.

By the time a 65" 4k OLED set is down to $2500 the next TV technology will be out :happy-smileygiantred:

Some interesting tidbits :text-link:

An older article with some valid insights :text-link:

I'll never buy another TV.... :teasing-tease:

Dammit man, I thought I had a solid plan.

Yeah, there will always be something on the horizon. I don't watch a lot of TV in the livingroom so the bleeding edge tech isn't a priority.

And this is much more comprehensive pertaining to what is available right now.

That reminded me to check my own Vizio TV for the firmware update that enabled Amazon Instant Video in 4K (support was said to be coming by such a means). Apparently it's out now. I'll need to see if I can stream something 4K from them.

Oh yeah, and that reminds me of something else I was planning on doing....

Content still seems pretty thin, but then, barring streaming services like Amazon or Netflix, you're generally having to buy new equipment to take advantage of 4K resolutions. The Sony Blu-Ray player we have hooked up to our Vizio P series isn't 4K compatible. The receiver will pass through 4K, but no source components are 4K capable. Even though DirecTV says they have 4K, you need to have a DirecTV compatible TV (Vizios aren't... right now that list starts and ends with Samsung). No word on if DirecTV is going to bother making a Genie client that's 4K capable.

I'm getting ready to take the plunge on a 65" LCD and am trying to decide if the additional $ is warranted for 4K. It looks like $1,200 for 1080P and $2,200 for a 4K.

Any advice, my friends?

At this point it is a question of long term planning. How long do you THINK you'll be using this TV? If it is more than 3 years, then you have ask yourself, will I regret not having 4K when the new formats are more commonly available on my devices?

Which is a good question. This will replace my 10 year old Mits (1080i) rear projection TV - which still works but pales compared to my 40" Sammy 1080P model.

I've been praying for it to break for the last five years.

I deserve a new TV dagnabit! :handgestures-thumbup:

Bob I am right there with you! My 12 yr old Mits 1080i has seen its best days and I am ready to make the leap. I am all in on 4k and will be getting one sometime this year unless something drastic happens.

I've been looking at the Samsung JS8500 and I think I am going to pull the trigger on that one. Trying to hold out till black Friday if I can.

Now... here's the painful new tech which will throw a wrench into any careful high quality TV shopper right now...

TVs are going HDR. The new HDMI spec supports it, there are already prototype displays demonstrating it, and all the standards to support it are written. So... in 3 years we may all be blown away with color depth accuracy and possibilities we never considered.

And that is one of the reasons why I am intrigued with the JS8500. It is the only Samsung with quantom dots, HDR capability and comes in a flat display. I just have no love for the curved panel.

Wait ... you mean there is brand new techology just over the horizon that'll make us regret buying the new TV with the new technology that we saved up for while waiting for the pricss to come down after we skipped a generation or two of kinda-new technology?

That never happens!
