So this is available from Amazon for $29.99 today. And they are the original theatrical versions.
Is there something really wrong with these? I see some reviews complaining heavily about picture quality
and various other issues of the "German release". I don't have any versions of the Trek movies at this point
but don't want to buy it now only to find the theatrical/director cut set will be available in 6 months
that will also do justice to a full restoration of the PQ.

Anyone?

Given the age of the content and the fact that I'm not a hard-core Trekkie, I'm thinking about taking advantage of a deal on Vudu to get all ten Trek movies (original and TNG casts) for $55 in UltraViolet HDX.

I always thought the first one was pretty good, for what it was. Just think, the first one probably would have never been made without Star Wars being released a couple of years before it, and Star Wars probably would have never been made without the original Star Trek series.

I had a similar thought when I saw the battle scene with all the elephants in Return of the King. That scene reminded me of the Hoth battle scene in Empire Strikes Back with the At-At walkers. That part of the book was where Lucas got the idea for Hoth.
