A new technology has just come to my attention.
My father purchased some HDMI cables from Monoprice that use a "RedMere" technology.

Looks like it's basically a chipped HDMI cable that encodes the data on one end and decodes it on the other, allowing a signal to be sent down a thinner/more flexible cable. Thing is, the cables themselves are directional- one end for the source, the other for the display. Reversing them means it won't work.
Maybe I've missed discussion on this, but it's something to keep an eye on.
